Mohamad Lotfy Goal Reflection Essay

Changing my Future

by Mohamad Lotfy

I currently work with Walgreens as an assistant manager and two years ago I had an “aha” moment. This moment caused me to ask myself two questions: What am I doing with my life? Why am I here? I felt as though my life was passing me by because I was in a position that I had no passion for and failed to make a difference in influencing society in a positive manner. I realized that I had become complacent and had succumbed to the belief that my career was going to be in retail even though I constantly complained about my job. Another one of my complaints at the time was the lack of focus that young people, especially minorities, seemed to be placing on education. Therefore, I decided to stop complaining and actually do something to change my circumstance and at the same time try to positively impact the lives of young people. I was then fortunate enough to gain admission to the Masters of Arts program at Michigan State University and began the journey to change my future.

On September 29, 2011, I stated that my main goals for entering the educational field were to make children aware of the importance of a quality education and then assist them in attaining that education. The masters program has only reaffirmed my conviction for attaining my goals. I have been privileged to learn from many wonderful professors as well as my fellow classmates, who are amazing educators that are dedicated to their students’ well being. They helped me realize that in order to attain my main goals, I need to establish goals that incorporate learning communities, shared leadership, and innovative teaching methods.

While the vision and goals that I have for my students is still strong, I have come to realize that I will not be successful in helping every student achieve academic success or even realize the importance of education. However, it is my responsibility to provide all my students with the proper environment, support, and tools for success. At the outset of the program, I initially believed that the masters program would provide me with all the necessary tools to accomplish my goals upon completion; however, the program has shown me that a dedicated educator is a lifelong learner that constantly seeks new knowledge to deal with the ever-changing problems in education.

In terms of my professional desires, I initially stated that at the outset of the program, I would like to teach K-12 students and then become a principal. Even though I have yet to secure a position in education, my goal still remains the same. I plan on receiving my Masters of Arts in Education and then pursuing a job as a teacher. Hopefully, I then can become an administrator that assists teachers in helping our students attain academic success.

Gerard Way said, “one day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.” Therefore, two years ago I made a decision to change my circumstances and pursue one of the most honorable professions in society. I entered the Masters of Arts in Education program at Michigan State University in order to attain the necessary skill to assist children in utilizing the benefits of education. The masters program has provided me with the reaffirmation that I needed to know that I made the right decision to change my future and pursue my passion to become and educator.
